Wokingham Singers (formerly the Wokingham Choral Academy) is a non-auditioned training choir for those who wish to start singing from scratch or refine existing singing skills.
Its basic aims are:
- to teach through a variety of different music styles, the techniques of voice production, and
- to cover basic music theory to allow an understanding and reading of a choral music score, and
- above all to promote the joy of singing.
The choir is in vibrant health. The Choir’s Director of Music, Dan Tickner, leads us and Andrew McKenna, a hugely talented professional musician, accompanies us on the piano. Dan has extensive experience across many choirs and types of music, and Andrew … well he just makes us sound great!
We rehearse, during school term time, on Thursday evenings at St Crispin’s School, Wokingham.
We have sung a bit of everything over the years. Our “repertoire” has ranged from The Beatles, Rogers & Hammerstein, Les Miserables, Gershwin, Guys & Dolls and Sondheim to folk songs from around the world, madrigals, some of the choral classics and modern choral classics such as John Rutter, and, of course, Christmas music from carols to choral gems.
We staged our first independent concert early in 2013, very much aimed at families, at The Emmbrook (Senior) School. Since then we have staged our own Christmas and Summer concerts. At these events we raise money for a local charity, the Wokingham branch of the LINK VISITING SCHEME, which “aims to befriend and support anyone who is isolated or lonely and who would benefit from receiving a regular visitor”, see http://linkvisiting.org
We have an active social agenda and look forward to welcoming new members whether beginners or those wanting to improve existing skills. We think you will enjoy the joy of just singing and the pleasure in discovering new music and new friends.
